Chapter 3

The gala arrived.

Garrett appeared at my side with a glass of champagne and a tone that expected gratitude: "You handled the story cleanly. But if you want that proposal tonight, you'll apologise to Lily in front of everyone first. She may not be clever, but she's mine. You remember that."

"Of course," I said.

"This is for your own good. You'll be spending a lot of time around her."

I gave him the smile he recognised — the composed, sensible, I-understand-the-bigger-picture smile of the woman he'd agreed to marry. He visibly relaxed.

"There she is," he said.

When my name was called, I walked to the microphone.

"Ladies and gentlemen, members of the press: regarding the recent forum incident, Lily Pemberton — as a member of Holloway Group's staff — was subjected to unfair and unwanted attention. Holloway Group failed to protect its own employee. On behalf of the company, I apologise to her."

Garrett, behind me, permitted himself a small, satisfied smile.

He opened the ring box. He opened his mouth.

His microphone had been cut.

Only mine still worked.

I turned to Lily and brought her to stand in front of Garrett.

"Furthermore — effective tonight, the engagement between Holloway Group and the Ashford family is formally dissolved."

"I want to thank Garrett Ashford for his work this year. As the incoming executive director of Holloway Group, I ask that the room join me in recognising him and the woman who truly has his heart."

"My company secretary. Lily Pemberton."

Felix stood up from the audience, leading the applause with enormous enthusiasm.

"On behalf of Davenport Capital — congratulations to Garrett and Lily. Long may they last. Every happiness."
