Day five of the countdown, I handed in my resignation at the hospital.

Years ago, to stay with Dante, I'd given up a fellowship abroad. Instead, I took an attending position at Mount Sinai and stayed in Manhattan with him.

My colleagues were blindsided by the resignation.

"You're leaving? Just like that, Nina?"

"You handed out wedding favors three days ago. What, are you going full housewife?"

A few of them teased.

I hugged my file folder and shook my head with a small smile.

"No. The wedding's off."
