So I ended up at dinner.

It was in the middle of nowhere — a private dining club tucked into the hills, members only, not on any map. His friends were already there, waiting.

"You're always on time. What happened today?"

"Car accident. Lucky to be alive."

Silence.

I sat next to Dominic, rigid with discomfort — especially when my phone started going off every few minutes. Elliot again.

I excused myself. Someone looked over. Dominic said, easily, "Her husband keeps close tabs."

I turned around. Every face at the table was now pointed at me.

I closed my mouth and went to take the call.

"Why weren't you picking up?" Elliot's voice was strained.

I looked at my screen. Eleven missed calls.

"I'm having dinner with a friend."

"What friend? Male or female? Do I—"

"You don't know them." I hung up.
