Chapter 7

The next morning I was heading out for work. Elliot followed me into the elevator.

"I'll drive you." He reached for my bag.

I didn't move. Looked at him.

He seemed to have completely forgotten the night before. He pulled his hand back and hit the lobby button. "Your car's at the shop, right? I'm going near the university today anyway."

He'd remembered that small detail.

"I'll get a cab."

I'd barely gotten my phone out when he took it.

"I want to drive you."

He looked at me sideways. I pressed my lips together. Then a loud notification tone cut through — he frowned, reaching for the screen. I got it back first.

"Since when do you have a custom alert for messages?"

"That's new."

I stepped into the corner of the elevator and unlocked it. Dominic.

I switched cars. Did you get sorted?

I frowned. ?

I'll buy you breakfast.

I'm busy.

No reply after that.

"Elevator's open," Elliot said, flatly.

Ground floor.

He told me to wait while he brought the car around — but before he could leave, a pink car pulled up to the building entrance. The driver stepped out and handed me the keys, explaining it was a loaner from the auto service center while my car was in for repairs.

"A loaner?"

"Our staff confirmed this morning." He was completely matter-of-fact.

I took the keys.

Elliot smiled. "Moving up in the world — that's a nice loaner." He leaned close, voice softening. "Just take my car. I'll be your driver."

I hesitated for exactly one second. Then I got in.

"You focus on work."

In the mirror, his face went blank. His shape got smaller.

I looked away. In the passenger seat: flowers and a takeout box. I touched it. Still warm. Breakfast, like he'd said.

Something loosened in my chest.
